Vinyl Enthusiasts?

Post by Tin Soldier »

I know we diehard fans have a fair bit (or used to), so I wonder what you play it on?

Me, I've got a few older ones, a couple linear tracking TTs for fun, but actually use the "run-of-the-mill" Audio-Technica LP120 (modded out the internal preamp) with a DJPRE II preamp for basic everyday (yeah, right) use right now. I'm actually looking for a new cartridge to replace the mediocre AT95E when I find the right price.

I'm sure some of you have me beat with some Pro-ject or Rega, right? Maybe some cartridge that costs three times my TT? C'mon, let's break out the TT porn here. :P

By the way, I've always wanted one of these if you're ever thinking of a gift:

I think I read somewhere, back in the nineties, that these optical turntables were only able to play black vinyl... (just saying)

Yes, I've spoken of these before back on the old Erasure fora, and bemoaned that I wouldn't be able to play my picture discs.

However, I do remember some having success with dark opaque colored vinyl. Either way, an ELP is not a gift I'd return.

I love my vinyl passionately but yes, at the moment, it's true I don't have anything to play them on. But honestly I'm content (for now) with being able to hold the beautiful physical copy and enjoy the cover art! 8-) Can't do that with downloads!

True, the intangibility of digital files is just not satisfying. Even were an album available as FLAC loaded to a tiny MicroSDXC card, I'd want it in 12x12" packaging if I could for the same reasons. :)

Well, not to rub it in, but you've missed some good deals lately (well, other than hunting through the thrifts, second-hand shops, and craigslist of course). The Audio-Techina I mentioned could have been had for around $160 via a recent promo. Some others like the Teac TN-400s were $175 at Rakuten/Buy.com, and there was a crazy Urban Outfitters clearance on a U-Turn Orbit Plus for $29! All were really good deals on TTs that at least wouldn't harm your vinyl...unlike a Crosley. NEVER play your valuable stuff on one of those. ;)

Thanks for the good info! Yes I missed out on those deals but I'll keep my eyes open and probably won't look seriously until I'm back living in NYC by this summer! Much appreciated! 8-)

You DID know but you forgot, which is fine! Over the summer, when I moved down here to south Florida, Mike Depaz wrote something like "Now that you're living here, see you soon!"

To which, you replied: "oh HIM you get to meet!"
